In a while....

yep it's true it has been quite some time since i posted . i've been busy ...kinda . So today i was bored thinking about this year and how great and shitty its been at the same time. And since all my toughts lead to music , i decided to make a a lil' mix tape of songs from this year that i think made my year . the first song reminded me of going to denver to see justice with duran and stef . we had a fun drive . we needed a ticket , so we simply got fate to lead us to justice themselves . they happened to be outside the laundromat where they were doing their laundry . xavier was kind enough to put us on the list. diplo opened and stuttered thru his set and at some point yelled "what's up detroit " hahaha guess he was homesick . he is is still a badass . which takes us to the second track . remain by jose gonzalez . it has that sad feeling to it and his droning voice carries you interconnecting the melodies , mike sheridan does the remix and he does a good job a it . speaking of doing good at your job ...lazaro casanova has been busy doing remixes and touring as well as his recent endeavor petFood . i had the chance to chat with him about lots of stuff a lil bit ago , but that is just another post in itself(soon to come) . spacer woman is just a classic i love it and everytime i hear it it makes me smile , i've heard several versions of this song and im not sure who did it first but this version is my favorite its by charlie . its 4 on the floor backbone, synthy bass and haunting voice make it one of my favorite italo disco songs . grafton primary is two brothers and a drummer . these aussies really have some kind of funk to their "electro-noir"sound , added this is the miami horror remix which is one of my favorites of this year. speaking of siblings the jets was an cheesepop group that was made up of 8 brothers and sisters . they had a couple hits but i really like this one -rocket 2 u is a great song . trinidad reminds me of going to cool partys in dallas , hanging out with the disqo disco kids, tony (dj schwa) and blake. i had a great time this summer playing with them . it just has that summer feel to it . im working on setting up an interview with the sydney confirm kids . they are good friends of mine so we need to catch up . last i checked they were working on some new remixes . this track has a great vibe to it . makes me want to go to trinidad. dj orion is the dj for yo majesty and he holds it down in austin . after i left dallas i stopped by austin and had a grand ol'time at a club with some friends , he was playing some cool shit . anyways check him out he is legit . having made it back from dallas , el paso did not feel the same . we had an experiment and tried a tuesdsay thing at a bar but the bar didnt hold up to our requierements . i think the better you plan out someting like a weekly party the better it will come out . so hopefully it will happen soon . me and chris are working on it . well this track reminds me of jess , we had a couple 2x2 were we had lots of fun . the whisler is for sure a soon to be anthem . i read about catz and dogs at shot callin' (lazaro's blog) they are awesome . lately i cant help but play this at every of my sets . i love the random noises. like the screeching cat and the 80's metronome are my favorite. los ninos del parque is an interesting track . it is by liaisons dangereuses a french electro-punk band from the 80's . they influenced alot of people including me and alot of the detroit house scene.

Good times..I could Just Conor Oburst!

Its 10:45 am on the morning of sunday the 24th 2008 . I am deep in sleep and i get woken by the phone . i was so mad , asking myself why no one else could answer the damn phone , walked across my house to find the phone . It was Duran , he sounded like he had something to say . He then informed me that he had just purchased tickets for him and some other people for Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band . I am a pretty big fan of Bright Eyes and I love Saddle Creek records so i was super stoked !! So Stoked i went back to bed ........3 hrs later i woke up and I could not Figure out whether it had all been a dream . So i called Duran back and He sayed it was sold out and had reached capacity . At this point i wished it was a Dream . SOLD OUT ! Conor Oberst was Less than 250 miles away from me and it was SOLD OUT!!. I called Raul and told him we had to go ! I told him to call Stinky up ..We were goin To Marfa!!

I figured its not TOO far away , we could find scalpers and that it would be a good drive . Finally Raul got a hold of his car and we hit the road at about 5 pm our time , Marfa is 200 miles a time change and one checkpoint away . So really it was calling it close considering its about 2 and a half hrs drive and a time change so almost 3 hrs and 1/2 . The Drive was fun . We played that game where you say something with each letter of the alphabet. we only made it about half way , we got side tracked. We had visions of lights and Stinky started freaking out thinking aliens were looking for her . Marfa just has a weird vibe to it and so does the drive. Finally we rolled up to a prada store in the middle of nowhere

now i knew we were getting close . Stinky's paranoia was getting bad , i think it had something to do with her fear of not getting into the show . Once in Marfa we looked for this place but had bad directions so we kinda got lost. Finally this cool pizza lady pointed us the right way. It was awesome they had a projection that said "conor oberst & the mystic valley band " i was so excited !! we MADE it !!! now to get inside........ after finding a parking spot i saw someone walking towards me and i asked if conor had played and he informed me that the Felice Brothers had just finished, man i was sooooo mad . i like them and i truly could not believe i had missed them . So we decide to walk towards the venue , lots of smokers taking their breaks were outside. I once heard "Act like you know what you are doing and no one will ask anything" . So with this mantraing in my mind , i walked up to the venue . And to my surprise the door opened , so i walked in scared of some bald headed bouncer asking me for my tickets and telling me to leave once he found out i didnt have any (i guess i forgot i was in marfa) . No security what so ever at all , this place was awesome it seemed like a cabin or something it had a warm feeling to it . So i decided to look for Duran . Who i found right away thanks to his shirt i recognized. It was awesome meeting up , especially once he told me it was free wine and tecate's!!! As i got the news about the free alcohol i felt someone looking at me . She was beautiful , we had eye contact and she said i could take the seat next to her . I settled down and saw i had a great view of the stage . Man , she smelled great . haha . I left the row to go get some free booze . We shared small talk but it felt different , it felt like we knew each other , we talked the whole show .
Conor Oberst's new LP was made in Tepoztlán, Morelos, México during the months of January and February, 2008. In Tepoztlán – a place known for Aztec Magic and Extra-Terrestrial Sightings – a temporary studio was created in a mountain villa called Valle Místico at the outskirts of the town. It was there that Oberst and the band lived and worked in near perfect harmony, often unaware of the hour or the day.Marfa was aperfect place to end the Tour.

Finally they came on ...............well a picture of conor was supposed to go here but i dont know how to drag pictures yet. They sounded great!! It was such a warm intimate show ... me and conor had a couple staring contests, i swear he is a jedi or something . Before i knew it my single serving friend was saying goodbye . The encore was amazing he started calling everyone from the tour out one by one . The felice Brothers played a couple songs w/him . It was the last day of the tour and you could tell all these people became family on the road , they closed with "Don't want to die in a hospital" EPIC ENCORE , EPIC SHOW , EPIC BAND , EPIC LADY , EPIC FRIENDS AND EPIC ADVENTURE ... EPIC NIGHT . I got to see them for free at a once in a lifetime show . It was truly a night to remember . So we went to Wendy's to celebrate our drive home

P.s - we almost hit a wolf but we did'nt
P.s.s- Stinky is a scardycat

LAZARO CASANOVA:INTERVIEW

so i got a chance to chat with lazaro casanova a while ago , he has been a busy man lately . we got to talk about his plans for 09' and his new label Petfood . He is going to be playing at HARDPOP on the the 31st of jan , my friend brian ephew will be opening-he has some awesome stuff too ,ill try to grab a song or two from Ephew so i can post them for your listening pleasure . some good local talent -keep your eyes on him . there will be some links for mp3's at the bottom so now read............................................................................................................................................................

[RaSeC2003: ok so i really want to thank you for doing this man [17:38] lazarocasanova: ofcourse man[17:38] RaSeC2003: so as you know i live in el paso / juarez area what do you think about the scene here??[17:42] lazarocasanova: i first played juarez, a few times actually before i got to play el paso. its funny cause before juarez i had played a few other cities in mexico and i always heard a very bad stigma about juarez. I was actually pretty worried about going over there initially. The first time i was supposed to play all the flights out of miami were cancelled so Ricardo (from pastilla digital) thought I was just too scared to go. The date got rescheduled and my first time at Hardpop was about 300 people. Each time its grown and now its something that sells out Hardpop which holds about 1000 people. The same happened with El Paso, first time was at Myst on a friday with Adam. That was a smaller turnout that has grown into what it was last time at Studio 69 with about 1200 people. Both Ricardo and Adam have been extremely nice to me and both cities have a booming music scene that is growing as such a fast rate.[17:45] RaSeC2003: yeah i was at that first show at hard pop it was epic , well im sure you have heard about whats going on in juarez ... do you think it will affect the scene ??? i mean it was always a scary place but now its one of the most dangerous cities in the world. [17:48] lazarocasanova: I'm sure it will affect it and I've heard a few acts have cancelled. But at the same time I see the line up Hardpop has and its solid act after solid act. To be honest I feel safer in Juarez than I do in Tijuana. When I'm in Juarez I go straight to the hotel then to the club, back to hotel then airport. It's not like I'm out in the streets wandering around. And Hardpop has always felt safe with a good vibe.[17:49] RaSeC2003: it sure is a great place plus the girls there are pretty good too ..haha[17:50] lazarocasanova: haha yea man. actually i've never hooked up with a girl there yet. Always way too drunk after i finish.[17:50] lazarocasanova: i think last time i drank absynthe? and i dont remember much from the night[17:51] RaSeC2003: must be the crown..yeah they have it there its a good way to forget the night ....so i have to ask this for my lady friends but the great casanova single?[17:53] lazarocasanova: yes, i've only had one girlfriend and i've been single primarily cause i need to focus on my music, travel, and now my label petFood. I've done plenty of stupid things on tour and I've calmed down a lot lately. [17:53] RaSeC2003: how considerate[17:53] lazarocasanova: well your body has a boiling point[17:54] lazarocasanova: and mine was beginning to tell me i need to take care of myself[17:54] RaSeC2003: congrats on petfood! tell me about it [17:54] lazarocasanova: thanks. it's something my friend and label partner Jay-You came to me with[17:54] lazarocasanova: after we did the remix for dirtybird[17:55] RaSeC2003: how is it working with him??[17:56] lazarocasanova: we got great response for that remix but we didnt even make the top 5, we figured maybe our sound is just too different for most people. So he was like "hey man lets do this label thing" and its a perfect way for me to put out my own music quickly. Plus i get to form an identity and really showcase not just my own sound but the petFood sound and any other artists we work with.[17:56] lazarocasanova: he's great to work with, we're good friends. His music taste is very similar to mine and he was one of the primary people to influence my sound expansion.[17:57] RaSeC2003: about that , explain where you are trying to head with your music.i've noticed a good change lately[18:01] lazarocasanova: i believe everyone finds a sound their comfortable with and for me it took me a few years. Even when I played a good chunk of electro in my sets a lot of people noticed I'd have some techno tracks in the mix, some deep-house, I never really just stuck to electro. I used to make music to standard of what I thought was "in" at the moment. Now I make music that I want to make with one focus in mind...a good groove. Whether it's a tribal drumline or a clean deep bass, there's always going to be a hypnotic groove in it. I'm generally referring to it as tech-house as it mostly has the good groove of house music with techno elements. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stick to one genre specifically and neither is petFood. It'll all just be unique fun music.[18:03] RaSeC2003: i have noticed alot of latin/afro influence in your "new" sound , where does it come from??[18:07] lazarocasanova: i'm glad you've noticed. my family is cuban and i grew up listening to a lot of afrocuban music, lots of tambores. I always liked the rhythm section in it, it just always felt good. Lately i've been hearing a lot of drums in music but it's usually made by some white european dude and it never sounds genuine to me so I wanted to give it a shot. My mom gave me a good chunk of her music collection and i've gone through picking out bits and samples. So under the Lazaro Casanova name you will for now always hear a big afro cuban influence. I recently introduced the Nitemares project which you will hear is completely different and darker.[18:09] RaSeC2003: yes i heard the feist remix you did. if feist has heard it how do you think it made her feel? [18:12] lazarocasanova: yea it started as a feist remix first but a friend of mine sent it to dubfire who wanted an instrumental of it so he can play it out. I put so much work into it that i decided it should be an original track to introduce nitemares. So i called it hellcab and then made a feisty mix of it. I think feist might be devastated if she heard it. I've managed to take such a happy song and turn it into a real dark twisted mess. Although I believe the original version is an old folk song that she kinda made a cover of.[18:14] RaSeC2003: yes actually nina simone played it at one point , i think its an old american standard . And now you have a version of it [18:14] RaSeC2003: Did you play any instruments growing up?? how did you get into music?[18:19] lazarocasanova: i actually dont have any musical background in my family. I took 2 years of classical guitar in high school, learned how to read/write music and completely forgot it all a year later. I've always been very geeky in the computer area so naturally electronic music would be a wise choice for me. I've self taught myself a few instruments including the drums, bass, and synthesizers. I'm always reading on music theory and all the computer programs i've learned through reading too. Which is why, I've alienated myself away from a lot of my earlier songs that weren't in key and didn't play too nice with the human ear. But yea, I'm constantly learning and will always be learning for the rest of my life.[18:20] RaSeC2003: so have you been concentrating mainly on djing or producing? [18:23] lazarocasanova: i would say before it was only djing. now its a one-two punch. i have all these ideas i want to get down and get real excited to go somewhere and try them in my dj set. it's great playing out your own music especially since you know every little aspect of each of your own songs, it allows you to make smoother transitions. i'm now refocusing some extra attention into the dj sets where i plan to cross over to traktor pro with 4 inputs and some midi controller.[18:24] RaSeC2003: what is your set up like right now?[18:25] lazarocasanova: djm1000 mixer, 3cdj's. Serato running on two of them and an extra i use for acapellas, tools, samples. But i find it very boring and limiting set up already.[18:26] RaSeC2003: do you ever see yourself going full midi or something like nathan fake does?[18:26] RaSeC2003: he is a busy guy on stage[18:28] lazarocasanova: i think traktor pro is a happy medium between live and dj. I do plan to have a live show down the line, but its not going to be often and i will probably do it with the nitemares project since it has a lot of fun elements in it.[18:29] RaSeC2003: that sounds fun , so you started djing at age 15!!! how was that ?? [18:30] lazarocasanova: yea doing all ages raves in miami. i took a break for a bit til i was 18 where i did a couple of weekly parties here for about 2 years[18:30] lazarocasanova: i got to do some traveling before 21[18:30] lazarocasanova: and it was funny because[18:30] lazarocasanova: since i was underaged it'll be a hassle to get me into some of these places sometimes even though i was the dj[18:32] RaSeC2003: so you got the "x's" of shame on your fists , and playing a big party [18:32] lazarocasanova: yea or i'd actually have a bouncer follow me around to make sure i only drink milk and water[18:33] RaSeC2003: milk ?? [18:33] lazarocasanova: haha i made up the milk part[18:33] lazarocasanova: but you know[18:33] lazarocasanova: non alcoholic beverages[18:34] RaSeC2003: what were you playing back then??[18:35] lazarocasanova: at 15 i'd say it was like dark tribal. funny how things go in full circle. 18-20 was considered that whole indie rock dance thing. from there i slowly went back fully into electronic music.[18:36] RaSeC2003: besides electronic music what do you listen to?[18:43] Meebo Message: lazarocasanova is offline[18:47] Meebo Message: lazarocasanova is online[18:47] lazarocasanova: sorry was on the phone[18:48] RaSeC2003: its all good[18:48] lazarocasanova: one sec[18:51] lazarocasanova: so yea[18:52] lazarocasanova: big fan of folk and blues music. i listen to bob dylan everyday to relax my mind. obviously i listen to electronic music sometimes, mostly to stay up to date and for influences.[18:52] lazarocasanova: i always catch the fabric mixes and some of the essential mixes. i just downloaded the loco dice essential mix that came out today and im already hearing a bunch of songs i like [18:53] RaSeC2003: yeah those are always good .. when do you see yourself doing one of those big shows like fabric or essential ?[18:57] lazarocasanova: i think if i keep focusing on producing some interesting songs and keep pushing forward with the label. Also if other dj's keep supporting my new music it's all good attention. I don't want to rush and get on one of thsoe a little too early cause i don't want anyone to question "why is laz getting a so and so mix?". I really wanna pay my dues before that happens.[18:59] RaSeC2003: i personally think you have , being how you played for 13 years but i guess you are right , slow and steady [18:59] lazarocasanova: im only 22 man 13 years is way off[18:59] lazarocasanova: lol[18:59] lazarocasanova: 15 to 22[18:59] RaSeC2003: sorry im bad with math[18:59] lazarocasanova: all good so am i[19:00] lazarocasanova: i went to school for creative writing and havent taken math since the 10th grade[19:01] RaSeC2003: so how did it all start ? was it revolver? shot' callin? or mstrkrft taking you under the wing?[19:03] lazarocasanova: revolver allowed gave me my first push it allowed me to network with a lot of artists. mstrkrft bringing me on tour with them was the next push. Shot callin' definitely helped in the sense that it showed people that i personally know and like these songs that i play. [19:04] lazarocasanova: the next logical step and push will be petFood[19:04] RaSeC2003: isee , so let's talk about LOS TAMBORES[19:07] lazarocasanova: well its the first release for the label and it almost got pushed back because of someone wanting it to license it for their next live cd but i prefer to have it out now. it's obviously big in drums and a bit on the house side with those classic chords. The bassline is me humming but pitched down. I think its a well balanced track and definitely has a big sound to it. It's worked well for me in its trial phases through my last couple of dj sets. Great crowd reaction. It's already gotten full support by Sander Klinenberg and Oscar G. I am awaiting back feedback from a few other musicians right now.[19:09] RaSeC2003: its got my approval, what did al-p and jfk think about it? do they listen to most of your stuff before you release it ?[19:12] lazarocasanova: thanks. i dont think they have heard the final version of it yet. jfk got to hear hellcab before it was done and he was real supportive of it. i'm weird with sending stuff out before its done most of the time. I mean i do it but after i get some solid ideas down just to get some feedback mostly. I'm afraid if i send out too early the feedback will interfere with my original idea for that certain song. Before tracks release my stuff does get sent out to various artists as exclusive promos maybe like 3 weeks before release.[19:14] RaSeC2003: wow i finally got to listen to los tambores on my big speakers and that bassline is impressive for humming . i can see why sander klinenberg liked it , it has that deep sound that lures you in for more [19:16] RaSeC2003: i really like the whistle in there too . so who is doing the artwork for pet food i like it [19:20] lazarocasanova: this guy in miami who is good friend of jay-you. his name is melvin, he is on the petFood top friends. he has a day job but he is having a lot of fun doing all the artwork for us. one of these guys who will never truly understand how talented he is.[19:21] RaSeC2003: its really awesome , it reminds me whats up with all the animal sounds in some of your last tracks?[19:24] RaSeC2003: where did they come from ? what made you think they were neccesary? they fit very well [19:26] lazarocasanova: ah yea a side project im doing with jay-you now called animales. i liked the idea of using random sounds as instruments and animal sounds are great. for the dirtybird remix we wanted horns and i thought elephant calls would blend in great with the horns. we're just trying to think outside of the box a little.[19:27] RaSeC2003: its great its using organic instruments for inorganic music[19:27] RaSeC2003: so what do you think about the direction of electronic music?? where do you see it going ??[19:34] lazarocasanova: i think electronic music in general is getting a lot of good attention now. i believe the electro/blog house thing is beginning to get tired though. It's mostly a young crowd thats fueling it right now but all those kids will grow up soon enough. I'm not calling electro childish by any means, just saying the big resurgence of it was primarily young hip kids. I've noticed a lot of blogs have moved onto other forms of music, techno, house, dubstep, fidget, etc etc. I personally think the next thing will be a nice medium. Dry minimal is dying out, loud electro is dying out. I personally think a nice medium between those two will come about.[19:38] RaSeC2003: yeah its funny about last year it was huge now we are getting parts of all that "underground" dance music leaking into the mainstream .[19:40] RaSeC2003: so when are you coming back to elpaso/juarez?[19:41] lazarocasanova: january 31st hardpop[19:42] RaSeC2003: awesome that will be a blast , why do you think you think ep/juarez loves you so much?? [19:44] lazarocasanova: i have no idea actually but its been well for me in mostly spanish speaking countries. I think the spanish name has something to do with it.[19:44] RaSeC2003: yes and also the afrocuban influence in your music [19:44] RaSeC2003: i think it gets us cos its in our blood[19:45] RaSeC2003: so what are the plans for 2009?? [19:46] lazarocasanova: haha good point[19:50] lazarocasanova: i have the first animales e.p. planned and the first nitemares e.p. planned both of which i should be recording in december. there is a juan maclean remix i am starting soon that should be out on DFA records in january. i'm going to focus a lot on my label and have already received a couple of submissions i'm really happy with so i will be introducing/backing some new artists. we are focusing a lot on winter music conference and there will be a petFood label party that week. i am in the process of talking with managers and booking agents for europe as i am looking to spend some time playing the europe circuit in 2009 as well as ibiza next summer.[19:51] RaSeC2003: europe ? is this going to be your first time playing there?[19:51] lazarocasanova: yea funny enough. everyone always mentions to me because of my musical taste and direction that europe is the market i should be in[19:53] lazarocasanova: ok going to head over to the grocery store for some food[19:53] lazarocasanova: i hope this is enough material for you[19:53] RaSeC2003: thanks alot man [19:53] lazarocasanova: no problem[19:53] RaSeC2003: i really appreciate it [19:53] lazarocasanova: keep in touch and let me know if youre coming to the juarez show[19:54] RaSeC2003: what songs could i post with the interview?[19:54] lazarocasanova: hell cab fo sho[19:54]

from the 10 to the 16

On monday last week i got to see deerhoof @ club 101 , we had practice and tyler told me he wanted to go so i convinced evan and ashley so they came along. there i saw stinky and some other people i had not seen in a while . we got there right after their first song , it was great . The lead singer Satomi is so cute , she is seriously like maybe 5 feet ...prob not . her bass seemed huge compared to her but she made it sound awesome . The drummer is so talented too , actually the whole thing was good (great energy) . the rest of the week i could not stop thinking about friday (THE DA was playing a show). i got to hang out with a bunch of friends and had blast , i had a blueberry stoli press and i decided i dont like blueberry vodka as much as i think i should . Friday finally came around and i was very excited , it was going to be a local band show . It was free and i was at zeppelins . i was hoping people show up. When we got there it was soooo cold out !! but thankfully once SUPERROOT played the crowd started to come in . Man those two are sooo badass , ROOTBUG makes some serious beats and PROMISE is a sick ass MC.
Once they played i knew it was going to be a rad show . We were on second , setup was a bitch but finally we got it done. After us played THE LEWD TENANTS , it was actually their premiere and they killed it ..man i want to buy a juno soo bad. THe KILOHERTZ closed the night and i was good as always . Well i guess like my friend sayed it only takes a free show for people to show up. And man was it true , this place was bumping . They even ran out of beer.... . The next day there was a good party with tranny bartenders and live art . i was good seeing lots of people out this weekend. I know el paso i not some awesome town like austin or dallas or denver or la but i had a great time this week ...now to rest.........

DREAMWEAVERS

I love girls and this section will be just about that.... girls... this is ninel
apperently she is pretty famous in mexico . she is just the perfect girl to start these posts.....
now enjoy
